Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility

Description of the Resident Experience
Residents on the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility service will train in both office-based and surgical areas of the sub-specialty. The resident will directly participate in all aspects of patient care alongside the attending faculty members with hands-on management of patients in both arenas. They will develop their complete patient interview, examination, cost-effective management, counseling, informed consent, patient safety and technical surgical skills on this service.

From the Intrinsic and Specialty Objectives for Obstetrics and Gynecology residents will be able to:

  • Describe the physiology of the normal menstrual cycle (puberty, perimenopause and fertilization timing)
  • Describe patterns of inheritance
  • Describe the embryology and anatomy of the abdomen and pelvis
  • Describe the mechanism of action of reproductive drugs
  • Provide pre-pregnancy health evaluations and make appropriate pre-pregnancy
  • Recommendations and counseling for pregnancy risk factors
  • Develop an understanding of the clinical application of hormonal testing and treatments
  • Describe the appropriate screening, diagnosis, pertinent history, focused physical examination, diagnostic testing and treatment as well as indications for referral (if applicable) for the following conditions:
    • Miscarriage and Recurrent pregnancy loss
    • Galactorrhea
    • Androgen excess and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
    • InfertilitTwo doctors performing reproductive surgery.
    • PMS/PMDD
    • Amenorrhea
    • Abnormal Uterine Bleeding
    • Leiomyomata
    • Mullerian anomalies
    • First trimester vaginal bleeding
    • Hyperemesis gravidarum
    • Miscarriage
    • Ectopic pregnancy

To achieve educational goals as identified in the CREOG Objectives Procedures in OB/GYN, this rotation gives the resident the opportunities needed to understand and perform:

  • Dilation and Curettage
  • Hysteroscopic polypectomy
  • Hysterosalpingography
  • Uterine septum resection
  • Incision of vaginal septum
  • Laparoscopic chromopertubation, ovarian cystectomies, adhesiolysis, fimbrioplasty
  • Treatment of endometriosis
  • Myomectomies (hysteroscopic, robotic and open laparotomy
  • Salpingotomy
  • Saline infusion sonohysterogram
  • Tubal anastomosis
  • Endovaginal Ultrasound (gynecologic and first trimester obstetric)
