The KUSM-W OB-GYN Interest Group serves to promote medical student awareness of the opportunities available in Obstetrics & Gynecology. Students learn about life as a resident in OB-GYN as well as a practicing physician. Listed below are some activities the interest group is organizing as well as opportunities for students within the group. Dates of upcoming OB-GYN SIG events can be obtained through the medical student leader or resident advisor listed below.
Resident Advisor: Dr. Shauna Lindstedt-Easterday
Students in the OB-GYN SIG visit a local women's shelter and provide an hour-long educational session. Students teach women about performing breast exams as well as screenings for breast and cervical cancer. The SIG has breast models provided by Susan G. Komen for these sessions.
Students are encouraged to become a member with the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Students can apply for the Gibbon's Award, a monetary stipend for attending the Annual Clinical Meeting. For more information about what ACOG can provide for medical students, please visit http://www.acog.org.
The group will host panels of residents and or attending physicians to discuss life in the field of obstetrics in gynecology as well as to discuss issues in women's health care. The students will also be guided on planning their fourth-year medical student rotations, and be given assistance in applying and interviewing for residency.
A shadowing project is in development for senior medical students. The student will be assigned to an attending physician who will choose a patient for the student to observe their entire care. This will entail the student observing each clinical visit as well as participating in procedures during the patients care. This will provide the student a better understanding of clinical medicine as well as continuity of care in the field of OB-GYN.
