Rotations

The University of Kansas Department of Surgery at Wichita is a clinically-oriented program that involves rotations in three hospitals: Via Christi Regional Medical Center (VC), Wesley Medical Center (WMC), and Wichita Veterans Administration Medical Center (VA). The program provides five years of graduated training in surgery during which time the residents are exposed to a structured educational experience that covers the central core of the basic science of surgery as well as an extensive clinical surgery experience. During the first two years, emphasis is placed on the acquisition of a solid foundation in fundamental surgical knowledge with a clinical experience that crosses many subspecialties. During this time, transplant, urology, plastic, breast, critical care, and trauma are included. In the final three years, residents are exposed to an exhaustive experience in all of the fields of general surgery with special emphasis in trauma, general, laparoendoscopic, vascular, pediatric surgery, critical care (including burn), and cardiothoracic surgery. There are no competing subspecialty surgical fellowships in Wichita.
