A. Resident Research Requirements
Residents of the Department of Surgery are expected to complete two research projects (either prospective or retrospective) during their residency training. Completion entails production of manuscripts that are worthy of submission for publication. As an alternative to completing two research studies, residents can complete one research study and two case reports.
B. Awards at Regional/National Conferences
Dr. Philip A. Woodworth won the Jack A. Barney Resident Competition, April 11th at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the Southwestern Surgical Congress, held in Colorado Springs, Colorado, April 9-12, 2000 for the study, “A Survey of Surgical and Primary Care Residents in a Community-Based Hospital System: Debt and Other Influences on Career Choices.” Co-authored by FC Chang, and SD Helmer.
Dr. Noel C. Sanchez won 2nd place in the Resident Research Competition in the clinical category, August 14th at the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Midwest Surgical Association, held at Mackinac Island, Michigan, August 13-16, 2000 for the study, “What is Normal Intraabdominal Pressure?” Co-authored by PL Tenofsky, JM Dort, SD Helmer, LY Shen, and RS Smith.
Dr. Robert W. Vorhies won the Resident Trauma Competition, in the clinical category, at the Annual Meeting of the Kansas Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, held in Wichita, Kansas September 10, 2000 for the study, “Chief Surgical Trauma Residents Can Accurately Interpret Trauma Radiology.” Co-authored by, PB Harrison, RS Smith, and SD Helmer.
Dr. Noel C. Sanchez won the Resident Trauma Competition, in the basic science category, at the Annual Meeting of the Kansas Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, held in Wichita, Kansas September 10, 2000 for the study, “What is Normal Intraabdominal Pressure?” Co-authored by, PL Tenofsky, JM Dort, SD Helmer, LY Shen, and RS Smith.
Dr. Elizabeth C. Paulsen won the Jack A. Barney Resident Competition, May 2nd at the 53rd Annual Meeting of the Southwestern Surgical Congress, held in Cancun, Mexico, April 29 – May 2, 2001 for the study, “Thoracic Epidural vs. PCA in Elective Bowel Resections.” Co-authored by MG Porter, PW Linhardt, and SD Helmer.
Dr. Matthew C. Byrnes won the Resident Trauma Competition, in the clinical category, at the Annual Meeting of the Kansas Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, held in Wichita, Kansas September 7, 2002 for the study, “Resident Work Hours Survey.” Co-authored by MJ Niederee, J Knudtson, RS Smith, and SD Helmer.
Dr. Jason L. Knudtson won the Student/Resident Research Award, at the University of Kansas School of Medicine – Wichita 11th Annual Research Forum, held in Wichita, Kansas October 8th, 2002 for the study, “A Survey of Residents and Faculty Regarding Work Hour Limitations in Surgical Training Programs.” Co-authored by MJ Niederee, MC Byrnes, SD Helmer, and RS Smith.
Dr. Matthew C. Byrnes won the Region VII Resident’s Trauma Research Paper Competition, in the clinical category at the 25th Annual Advances in Trauma Meeting as part of the Region VII Resident Competition of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, in Kansas City, December 5, 2002, for his manuscript, “Resident Work Hours Survey.” Co-authored by MJ Niederee, JL Knudtson, RS Smith, and SD Helmer.
Dr. Kimberly Ponnuru won the Resident Trauma Competition, in the clinical category, at the Annual Meeting of the Kansas Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, held in Wichita, Kansas September 6, 2003 for the study, “Level II Trauma Activation: Evaluation of Triage Criteria.” Co-authored by S Ponnuru, M Hague, JM Dort, and RS Smith.

Dr. Matthew C.
