Program Description

The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita General Surgery Residency Program is a University-affiliated, community-based program that is fully accredited and has been in continuous operation for nearly 50 years. Training takes place at three major hospitals: Via Christi Regional Medical Center, Wesley Medical Center, and the Wichita Veterans Administration Medical Center, all within a five mile radius. In addition to the three major hospitals, residents operate in the ambulatory surgery centers; evaluate patients in the hospital clinics and private offices.

Wichita, as the largest city in the state of Kansas, is a major referral center for the entire state as well as portions of adjoining states. All major surgical disciplines are represented, including general, cardiothoracic, vascular, pediatric, plastic, colon/rectal surgery, gynecology, and urology. Within the discipline of general surgery, the surgical residents have extensive exposure to the major components of general surgery, i.e. trauma, breast, endocrine, and gastrointestinal. They also have exposure to burn care (Regional Burn Center at Via Christi Regional Medical Center/St. Francis Campus), transplantation (renal, cardiac and pancreatic), endoscopy, and critical care. There are no competing surgical fellowships in Wichita.

Should you become a resident in our program, your five years would provide you with a full spectrum of surgical training. Successful completion of our program would prepare you for practice in an urban or rural setting. Fellowship in virtually any area of surgical specialty. If you anticipate performing a fellowship after residency, our graduates have obtain positions in a wide variety of disciplines including Cardiothoracic, Colorectal, Vascular, and Plastic Surgery, Laparoscopy Critical Care and Trauma.
