Alan Blakely is the Educational Specialist at KU School of Medicine-Wichita. He has a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree in chemistry, from Drew University and the University of California- Davis, respectively, and a PhD in science education from UC Davis. He got involved in medical education through the Postbaccalaureate Reapplicant Program at Davis where he was responsible for the implementation, administration and evaluation of the program.
As the Educational Specialist, Alan is involved in a number of curriculum design and evaluation projects. These include working with the standardized patient program on developing high quality feedback and student evaluation programs, working with residency programs on evaluation and accreditation projects, and teaching study and testing skills to residents and medical students. Alan is an active participant in the National Association for Research in Science Teaching and has been on the editorial board for the Journal of Research in Science Teaching.
Anne Walling obtained her medical degree (MB ChB) from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. After several rotating internships in Dundee Teaching Hospitals, she practiced in an inner-city community and was Medical Officer for local school and community child services. Dr Walling undertook postdoctoral training in Public Health Medicine in London. This included practical experience with the Kent Area health Authority and a research fellowship at the University of Kent at Canterbury. She passed the examinations for Membership of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians in 1978 and her thesis was accepted by the Royal College in 1981. She was subsequently elected to Fellowship of the Royal College (FFPHM).
Dr. Walling has held several positions in the Department of Family and Community Medicine in Wichita since joining in 1982. She holds joint appointments with Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine. Dr Walling is a tenured professor and Associate Dean for Faculty. Her teaching and clinical practice now focuses on care of the elderly. She also teaches and publishes on headache and medical education. Dr Walling is actively involved in several curricular and administrative functions on both campuses. She is associate editor of American Family Physician and the AAFP Essentials Monograph Series and contributes to BMJ Learning as an author and editor. She has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles, 16 book chapters and authored multiple grants.
As the Senior Coordinator of the program, Holly recruits, hires, trains, and schedules the standardized patients. In addition, she schedules and trains all patients for the annual clinical skills assessment exam. Holly holds a M.A degree in sociology from Wichita State University. She has taught courses for Wichita State University, as well as worked on private research grants with other sociologists in the Wichita community. Holly is a member of the Midwest Sociological Society as well as a member of the Association of Standardized Patient Educators.
