Grant Writing Tips
- Use basic English and avoid jargon.
- Use correct font, margins, # of characters per inch, and # of lines per inch.
- Do not use bold to distinguish text. It does not copy well.
- Have correct number of copies.
- Spell out all acronyms initially.
- Use black ink for charts and tables.
- Do not hand draw structures.
- Do not rely on spell check.
- Be consistent in format and style throughout application.
- Follow the agency guidelines.
- Check ahead to make sure chairs/officials will be on campus for signatures.
- Get Fed Ex labels ready in advance and verify address.
- Have extra printer/copier toner on hand.
- Provide a table of contents for appendices.
- Ask for letter of support well in advance of deadline.
- Place letter of support in the same order as the biographical sketches for consistency.
- There is no requirement for applicants to use maximum number of pages allotted, but do stay within page limitations.
- All page numbers should be listed and in correct sequence.
- Proofread! Have zero tolerance for typographical errors, misspellings, or sloppy formatting.
- Have your proposal reviewed by someone not directly involved in its development.
- Remember! This is your first impression. A PI who puts time and effort into the proposal will likely show the same level of care and attention to detail in their research.
