Grant Review Process

Deadlines for submitting proposals through Grants.gov

The Office of Research is primarily responsible for the pre-award or application phase of obtaining extramural funding. We process proposals for funding from both federal and private funding agencies. Proposals may be of a service-oriented or research nature, for instruction or training of medical students and residents. We assist our faculty by ensuring that proposals are in compliance with University rules, government regulations, and specific practices of the funding agency.

The post-award phase of the funding process is overseen by the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City (KUMC).

The Office of Research Grant Administrator will review the proposed application as follows:

• The routing and face pages are correct and the appropriate departments have sufficient time to review the grant in its entirety.  Departmental signatures will be obtained from the Office of Research.
  • This process takes an average of 7 to 10 business days, please allow sufficient time for the review process
• Application is complete, conforms to funding agency guidelines, and is accurate in terms of forms and budget.
• Salaries are appropriate according to grant guidelines; the budget (direct and indirect costs) is appro­priate and equipment items are justified; and the budget includes as much overhead as can reasonably be requested.
• An Institutional Research Safety Report Form, completed and signed by the principal investigator, has been included with all grant applications.
• The grant is returned to the principal investigator to make appropriate changes where needed.
  • The principal investigator is responsible to submit the grant to the funding agency.
  • Once the changes are made, two completed copies need to be submitted to the Office of Research.
    • One copy will be kept on file
    • The additional copy will be sent to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City (KUMC) for additional processing
