General Information
Supervision
All examinations will be checked with appropriate staff radiologists before final dictation. The residents will initially be much more closely supervised in their day to day activities. Over time they are gradually given more autonomy within the department. The purpose of this gradual increase in responsibilities is to assure that the resident will have demonstrated sufficient competence to enter practice without direct supervision by the time they complete their training. The well being of the patient will always be the primary focus of both the resident and his/her supervising physician.
Clinical Facilities
Diagnostic x-ray procedures are performed in a modern PACS environment with three fluoroscopic rooms, two special procedure/angiographic rooms including bi-plane, and six other diagnostic rooms. Film screen mammography is the only area currently using film.
Ultrasound includes five units which have color doppler capabilities. Three additional ultrasound units are used predominantly for portable examinations. These are used primarily for intraoperative procedures and in the emergency room.
There are five GE CT scanners including a 64 slice, three 4 slice scanners and one with CT Fluoroscopy. The MR facilities include a GE 1.5 Tesla Signa and a 1.5 Tesla Philips MRI with functional, spectroscopic and diffusion capabilities. PET/CT imaging is performed at the VA Medical Center and is brought to the hospital for review on workstations.

Library Facilities
The residency has a library full of textbooks on current radiology practices, including syllabi from the ACR and other board preparation references. The program has a healthy yearly budget to keep the library equipped with the most up-to-date publications. The Department of Radiology has numerous textbooks, as well. Both Wesley Medical Center and The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita have medical libraries accessible to residents.
The ACR teaching files on CD, along with other resident study references on CD, are in the library and available for personal or group study. There is a direct access T1 line for world wide web access in the resident library. These computers have 20 inch monitors for viewing radiology films online and are hardware equipped to speed through viewing radiology film cases on CD or on the internet. The department also has access to a LCD projector to view plain films or radiology cases located on the computer on a large screen for group study sessions. Residents meet at noon in state of the art conference rooms equipped with audiovisual equipment including internet & PACS access.

Resident Night Call Facilities
A call room is located in the radiology department for the resident on call. This room is equipped with a bed, study area with a desk, television, a PACS monitor, phone and bathroom facilities.
Meal Tickets are provided for the resident on call to use in the Wesley Cafeteria or the Wesley Four Corners Grill. Each resident is allotted $11 per call night.
"Buddy call" for the 1st year residents begins in October. The 1st year resident will accompany a more senior resident to become acquainted with the usual call responsibilities.
Call is equally distributed among all eligible residents. After completing one full year of radiology training, the resident will be eligible to perform call responsibilities.
(Call is discussed
in more detail on the "On Call" page.)
