Residents participate in the Annual American College of Radiology In-Service Exam, and the annual Radiologic Physics examination (RAPHEX). First year residents are given a mock ER exam prior to beginning call. All residents participate in a mock oral exam administered by the program director. Senior resident also participate in a senior mock oral exam administered by subspecialty faculty members. Senior residents are also given multiple board reviews in the spring of their final year by various faculty. Residents are given leave to attend the written and oral board exams, as well as the ACR and RAPHEX exams.
Upon completion of specialty rotations, the staff will evaluate the resident using a standard written form to include the six General Competencies endorsed by the ACGME. They are (1)Patient Care, (2):Medical Knowledge, (3)Interpersonal and Communication Skills (4)Professionalism, (5)Practice Based Learning and Improvement and (6)Systems-Based Practice
This form is available to the resident for his/her review in the radiology residency coordinator’s office. The purpose of the evaluation is to evaluate performance and behavioral characteristics deemed desirable for an accomplished diagnostic radiologist. Problems, weaknesses and strengths of the resident will be discussed with the resident by the Program Director or designee semiannually or as necessary. Evaluations will also be given to technologists in the appropriate area of the department to evaluate the residents’ performance.
Patient evaluation forms are distributed by the radiology department with comments regarding physician performance and those involving residents are returned to the director for inclusion in the resident’s portfolio. In addition, a formal evaluation of dictations is performed.
The first year residents will have a personal review quarterly with the Program Director or Assistant Program Director to summarize the resident’s progress. All other residents will have a semi-annual review with the Program Director or Assistant Program Director. The resident will be given an opportunity at these meetings to address any problems or complaints that have not been addressed during routine interactions with the staff.
The graduating senior residents will have a final review with the program director prior to their leaving the radiology residency.
Staff Evaluations
The resident will have the opportunity to anonymously evaluate the teaching staff monthly. This will be done using an electronic form. The results of these evaluations will be tabulated and summarized every six months and will be reviewed by the Program Director. The results will then be shared with the staff for the purposes of strengthening and improving the residency program.
An overall review of the program will be completed approximately once a year by the residents and teaching staff. The results of the confidential program questionnaire will be will be reviewed by the Education Committee and shared with the residents and staff.
Residents will maintain an electronic learning portfolio where they provide documentation of their progress in the ACGME’s six general competencies. This will be a portfolio the residents will take with them after the completion of residency and serve as a bridge to their maintenance of certification.
Formal "Goals and Objectives" are written for each rotation in diagnostic radiology. The goals and objectives for each rotation are structured under the six general competencies. In addition, a reading and reference list is provided.
Along with the ACGME’s General Competencies, these Goals and Objectives are a helpful tool in evaluating the resident’s progress.
