Frequently Asked Photo and Video Questions

What resolution and format do I need for printed materials?
For printed materials, it is recommended that you use high-resolution files – 300 dots per inch (dpi). Photo files that are high-resolution can be sized down for use on a website, while photo files that are low-resolution cannot be sized up for use in printed materials.

What resolution and format do I need for Web use?
For use on a website, it is recommended that you use low-resolution files – 72 pixels per inch (ppi). Photo files that are high-resolution can be sized down for use on the Web, while photo files that are low-resolution cannot be sized up for use in printed materials.

Do I need written permission to publish a photograph of other people?
It depends on the people in the photograph and the publication in which the photograph is to appear. It’s always best to assume that you do need permission though that isn’t always the case. If you need assistance or have any questions, contact Public Affairs at 316-293-2643 or wicpa@kumc.edu.
