Dr. Paschal’s research and scholarly efforts continue to focus on health disparities and related areas of public health. During this past fiscal year, her grant and contract accomplishments were extensive and involved her work on seven funded projects. She served as the (1) Principal Investigator of a with the E.C. Tyree Health and Dental Clinic, “Healthy Smiles: An Oral Health Program for the Medically Underserved”; (2) Project Director/Co-Investigator of a CDC-funded study, “Prevalence of Epilepsy in Rural Kansas”; and (3) Principal Investigator of the Kansas Health Foundation Study, entitled “Technical Assistance for STI Surveillance in Rural Kansas Communities.” In addition, Dr. Paschal served as a co-investigator on several studies during the same fiscal year including: (4) a NIH-NICHD funded study, “Improving Communication with IVF Patients about Risks such as Multiple Births (Frazier, LM – PI); (5) a CDC-funded study, “Prevalence of Developmental Disabilities among Children with Epilepsy in Rural Populations (Lindeman, DP-PI); (6) a NIH-NCRR K30 Transitional Investigator Fellowship (Ellerbeck, E-PI), and a (7) Kansas Health Foundation funded project, “KU-MPH Expansion (Choi, W-PI).
Dr. Paschal was very active in the dissemination of her research. For instance, during the past fiscal year she published three manuscripts and had an additional six manuscripts that were accepted for publication. During that time period she had also had two additional manuscripts that were review during the year. Furthermore, during this time, Dr. Paschal had six publications that were in preparation. Collectively, these publications reflected her work in health disparities. Finally, Dr. Paschal has disseminated her work through presentations to include: two scientific posters presented at national/international conferences, an oral presentation at a regional conference, and two scientific posters at a local conference.
Teaching has always been a strong point with Dr. Paschal’s commitment to the University. In the last fiscal year, she provided three seminars to fourth-year medical students enrolled in the Department’s Health of the Public (HoP) rotation. She also provided instruction to the Master of Public Health (MPH) program for the following courses: Social and Behavioral Aspects of Public Health; Health Disparities and Public Health; and a directed studies (Special Topics) course. As a guest lecturer, Dr. Paschal also provided a talk in the Clinical and Translational Research Seminar (CTRS). Moreover, Dr. Paschal was the Chairperson for four students that graduated in the MPH program during the fiscal year, and she served s a committee member for five other students’ capstones. During the fiscal year, Dr. Paschal served as the MPH advisor for seven students.
University service on behalf of Dr. Paschal during the past fiscal year included her service as: Chairperson of the bi-campus MPH Curriculum Committee; member of the bi-campus MPH Executive Council; member of the bi-campus MPH Concentrations Committee; scientific member of the KU-Wichita IRB’s Human Subjects Committee; member of the Kansas Masonic Cancer Research Institute; and faculty advisor for the Kansas Public Health Leadership Institute. Finally, she served on the search committee for two epidemiology positions in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health.
Professional service during the past fiscal year included Dr. Paschal’s work as a Peer Grant Reviewer for the NIH Challenge Grants and her work as a Peer Manuscript Reviewer for five academic research journals. In addition, Dr. Paschal served as the project evaluator for a Northeast Wichita Health Coalition and for the Wichita-Sedgwick County Oral Health Coalition’s Give Kids a Smile Event. Finally, she served on several community committees and boards including, the two previously mentioned Coalitions, the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center, Jack and Jill of America/Air Capital Wichita Chapter, and the Pure & Simple Lifestyle Project.
Professional affiliations during the past fiscal year included her membership on the: American Public Health Association, Kansas Public Health Association, Society for Community Research and Action, and the American Academy of Neurology.
