For Clinical Sites

The best QI projects are those that both help the clinical site and provide an excellent experience for the students. Examples that we have had success with and can port to new clinical sites include anticoagulation, safe prescribing of opiates, and transitions of care.

Resources needed

  • A site champion (preferably a clinician) at your location
  • Work with students as encouraged in the schedule below
  • An EHR that can output a file that contains a list of patients meeting clinical criteria (written statement about data management in PHP is available).
  • Student access to your EHRs (students have privacy training; written statement about data management in PHP is available)
  • Optional, but nice: ability for EHR to generate a spreadsheet of baseline rates of the clinical measure the students will study. This allows the students to create a baseline SPC Chart (see graph in lower right of this page)

Schedule

  • Students' meeting
    • Who: clinic stakeholders (physician, staff, others)
    • Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday lunch hours or afternoon of the following weeks
      • Week 1: students and clinic agree on aim and scope of project
      • Week 3: students present to clinic proposed interventions and clinic determines which ones to implement
      • Week 4: students present to clinic implementation proposal and items agreed to are implemented in final week
  • Structured observations of work flow. 1-2 afternoons during each of the first two weeks
  • Chart reviews using EHR at the clinical site. Weeks 1-2
