The American Board of Internal Medicine and The American Board of Pediatrics offers dual certification in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. The combined residency program includes at least four years, (two years in each specialty) of coherent training integral to the residency of each discipline.
To meet eligibility requirements for dual certification, the residents will satisfactorily complete 48 months of combined training, and attain clinical competence in both specialties as verified by the directors of both programs. The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita program is coordinated by the Department of Internal Medicine and the Department of Pediatrics.
The objectives of the combined program include the training of general physicians for practice or academic careers addressing the spectrum of illnesses in the newborn, young child, adolescent and adult. Graduates of the combined residency program will be able to function as practitioners in primary care or enter a subspecialty training program. This clinical training also prepares graduates to undertake research in areas shared by Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, including adolescent medicine, medical genetics, clinical epidemiology, medical decision making and health care delivery. At the conclusion of 48 months of training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, the resident will have experience and instruction in prevention, detection and treatment of illness, rehabilitation of patients, socio-economics of illness, ethical care of patients, and the team approach to the provision of medical care.

The affiliated institutions are located close enough to facilitate cohesion among the house staff in the training program. Inpatient rotations alternate between Internal Medicine and Pediatrics every four months throughout the four years. During assignment to either Medicine or Pediatrics, the resident is regarded as other trainees in that particular program. Call responsibilities are the same as categorical trainees. Faculty exchanges over curriculum, evaluation, administration, and related matters in the combined program occur to assure a coordinated experience. Care is exercised to avoid unneeded duplication.
The combined residency is coordinated by co-directors who are the program directors for the two departments. An advisory committee exists to review the curriculum, resident schedules, evaluation process and recruitment needs. A graduate of a combined Med/Peds residency program is able to provide support as an advisor for the residents in the program. The trainees in the combined program are under a joint contractual appointment during the entire four years and are evaluated by the existing process in each department. An evaluation is performed at least every four months as the resident is changing services between specialties. An annual evaluation is performed by the co-directors. Issues such as vacation, moonlighting, salaries and fringe benefits are determined by the Wichita Center for Graduate Medical Education and are standard for all residency programs through the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita.

Pediatric Notes:
(#) 5 months of Intensive Care training is required, 3 months of which must be NICU with one month in each year and 2 months of PICU.
(*) Pediatric Subspecialty: Four (4) one month rotations from the following list: Allergy/Immunology, Cardiology, Endocrinology/Metabolism, Hematology/Oncology, Neurology, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, and/or Pulmonology.
(**) Pediatric Outpatient/ Community is a 3 month Block (Combines, Adolescent, Behavior/Development and Community).
The curriculum for Internal Medicine involves 24 months of direct patient care. Nine to twelve months of General Medicine at the PGY-1 level is required. The remaining 12-15 months will be on subspecialty services.
The curriculum for Pediatrics involves 24 months of direct patient care, including 14 months of general pediatrics and 10 months of required subspecialty and elective services including newborn and pediatric intensive care.
In order to provide an integrated approach to medicine and coordinate the practice of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, several opportunities exist for subspecialty rotations that provide experience in both areas. Adolescent Medicine, Endocrinology, Infectious Disease, Rheumatology and Emergency Department experience are included. A rural medicine rotation is available which also offers exposure to medicine for all age groups.
Outpatient care responsibilities occur at KU Medical School-Wichita Internal Medicine Clinic and Wesley Medical Center Pediatric Clinic continuously throughout the four years. Participation in two one-half day clinics a week include one clinic in Internal Medicine and one in Pediatrics. All clinic responsibilities are supervised by faculty members of each department.
Our goal is that your education will include comprehensive and longitudinal primary care for your patients and their families. You will continue to follow and build relationships with the same patients throughout your four-years of residency.
Conferences are available throughout the year for both disciplines. Residents are encouraged to attend the conferences that are related to the subspecialty rotation in which they are enrolled. However, they are able to attend conferences in either discipline if the information is of interest to them. Attendance is encouraged at the Adolescent Medicine conference, which occurs monthly. Other didactic training occurs during morning reports on each specialty and in the Ambulatory setting.
