Wesley Medical Center

The Pediatric Residency Program is based out of Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS.  Wesley Medical Center is a regional acute-care center with 760 beds and 102 bassinets.  It is a longtime leader in in women’s and children’s health, with well-established programs including in vitro fertilization, a Level III Perinatal Center, a freestanding Birth Care Center, neonatal intensive care, pediatric critical care, a child development program, social work, nutrition and pharmaceutical support dedicated to pediatrics.

The pediatric service includes a 43-bed general pediatric floor, and a 12-bed pediatric intensive care unit with plans to expand to a new 28-bed unit in the future.  There is also a pediatric sedation unit, a pediatric ambulatory surgery unit, a neonatal intensive care unit, a neonatal special care unit, and a pediatric emergency room. 

Wesley is also a Level 1 Trauma Center and has the largest Emergency Dept. in Kansas with over 78,000 emergency visits annually.  Wesley also has the only Pediatric ER in Kansas. In 2006 it had approximately 270 pediatric traumas with about 100 admitted to the PICU. The total number of admissions to the general pediatric floor for 2006 was 3181. In 2007 there were 1044 PICU admissions with an average daily census of 7 patients.

Approximately 6,000 babies are born at the medical center each year. Wesley's LDR has 26 labor rooms and 3 OR's, handling both high and low risk deliveries within the hospital.  The Wesley Birthcare Center has 20 LDRP (labor, delivery, recovery, and post-partem) rooms and 2 OR's.  The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Special Care Nursery have 62 beds dedicated to premature and critically ill infants. The Perinatal Center is a referral base for 23,000 deliveries across Kansas and surrounding states. NICU physicians respond to more than 750 admissions annually.

The Wesley Pediatric Clinic is located approximately 1.5 miles from the main hospital, and is staffed by residents under the supervision of faculty pediatricians. Total number of patient visits to the Wesley Pediatric Clinic in 2007 was 24,769.

The medical staff of 700 physicians and 3,000 employees at Wesley Medical Center provides a full range of diagnostic and treatment services for patients from throughout Kansas and northern Oklahoma. Wichita has a population of approximately 350,000, but the referral base is about two-thirds of the State of Kansas, or 1.5 million people.

The Wichita area offers the amenities of larger cities with the friendliness and personal warmth of smaller communities in mid-America.

With an area population in excess of 500,000, Wichita is the largest city in Kansas. Known as the air capital of the world, the city houses airplane manufacturers Boeing, Cessna, Bombardier Aerospace and Raytheon.

Health care is Wichita’s second largest employer, providing many opportunities for practicing physicians. Sporting events offered in Wichita include games played by the Wichita State University Shockers, Wichita Stealth professional arenafootball, Wichita Wranglers professional minor league baseball and Wichita Thunder professional hockey team.

Located in the heartland of America, Wichita is within a few hours driving time to Kansas City, Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Wichita is also just a day’s drive or less from Dallas to the south, Denver and the breathtaking Rocky Mountains to the west, and the beautiful Ozark Mountain region to the east.

Surrounding Wichita, and throughout Kansas, are numerous lakes and rivers offering a full range of outdoor activities. In addition, many fascinating historical sites are located in the Wichita area and across the state.
