WCGME

The Wichita Center for Graduate Medical Education (WCGME) is a not-for-profit consortium consisting of the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, Via Christi Regional Medical Center, and Wesley Medical Center. Its mission is to provide excellence in graduate medical education through a collaborative partnership, and its purpose is to coordinate an organized educational program with faculty guidance and supervision of residents to promote safe and appropriate care for patients, while facilitating the resident's ethical, professional and personal development. WCGME employs all residents, providing a most competitive salary range and fringe benefit package. The office is responsible for residents' Basic Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification, DEA licensure, contracts, educational allowances, orientation, payroll, postgraduate permit, temporary and permanent state licensure, vacation and meeting requests and loan deferments. All fringe benefit reimbursements will be provided by WCGME.

Educational Allowances

Professional Development Allowance: (Cumulative)
WCGME will provide a $1000 per year professional development allowance to be used for: obtaining full licensure via the Kansas Board of Healing Arts, renewing DEA registration, purchasing "uniforms" or for expenses approved by your Program Director and incurred in attending educational conferences or in the purchase of educational equipment and/or materials.

PALS and NRP Registration Fee:
PALS and NRP certification and recertification fees provided at no cost to residents.

Postgraduate Permits and Initial DEA Registration:
Kansas license (Postgraduate Permit) and initial DEA registration provided at no cost for PGY-1 residents.

Professional Liability Insurance:
Residents will be provided with insurance with limits as required by Kansas law, plus excess coverage provided via the Kansas HealthCare Stabilization Fund.

Clinical Tools:
Residents will be provided with a Palm handheld, and Harriet Lane Handbook at the start of the PGY-1 year.  Yearly membership to the American Academy of Pediatrics and PREP course materials are additional benefits.

Salary Advance for Moonlighting Insurance:
Salary advances are available to purchase malpractice insurance for moonlighting activities that have been approved by the Program Director

Salary Advance for Relocation Expense:
Salary advances of up to $2,000 are available to new residents to assist with relocation/start-up expenses

Insurance

Health Insurance:
Health and dental insurance for the resident and health and dental insurance for resident's dependents (at a monthly cost to the resident), all of which will be provided through WCGME's employee group insurance plan. Expenses for covered services provided by Wesley Medical Center or Via Christi Regional Medical Center not fully paid by health insurance will be fully paid by WCGME

Life Insurance/Accidental Death and Dismemberment:
Full payment of premiums for life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment, each equal to annual salary raised to the next even one thousand.

Long-Term Disability:
Full payment of premiums for long-term disability which will pay 60% of monthly earnings up to $1,500 after 180 days disability

Hospital meals, pagers, and parking

Meals:
Meals are provided in hospital cafeterias or coffee shops when on-call and required to stay on hospital premises for 24 hours or longer. Lunch is also provided daily during noon conference.

Pagers:
Pagers are provided at no cost

Parking:
Free parking is provided at all Wichita hospitals in designated physician lots

Vacation/Leave

Vacation: (Non-cumulative)
All residents receive 15 weekdays paid vacation annually; to be used at a time approved by the program director.  An additional 6 days of “holiday scheduling” occurs each year between December 21 and January 1 that is not deducted from the overall vacation allowance.

Education Leave: (Non-cumulative)
Residents receive up to f5 weekdays of education leave annually, with approval of the Program Director.

Sick Leave: (Cumulative up to a maximum of 30 days)
Residents receive 10 weekdays with pay, annually for absence due to sick leave. Sick leave is defined as absence due to illness or health maintenance needs of the resident or their dependents. The program director will determine whether or not make-up service and education are necessary in order to certify credit for the residency year. Need for additional time off, without pay, will be considered on an individual basis.

Retreats and Social Gatherings

Bi-annual pediatric/med-peds retreats are held in the spring and fall of each year. Pediatric Interest Group (PIG) events are held bi-monthly throughout the year at faculty homes.  Social gatherings with all WCGME residency programs are hosted on the first Fridays of each month.  Many more informal gatherings occur regularly!
