Dialing
Instructions
On-campus extensions are 5 digits in length and begin with a
3.
Our campus is connected via 5-digit (toll free) dialing to both
the KUMC campus in Kansas City and the main campus in Lawrence.
These numbers can be reached as follows:
- 785-864-xxxx dialed as 4-xxxx Lawrence, administrative &
academic numbers
- 785-812-xxxx dialed as 2-xxxx Lawrence, mainly residence hall numbers
- 913-588-xxxx dialed as 8-xxxx Kansas City, KUMC campus
(If any of the above are dialed as long distance, (9+1+10-digits),
you will be charged toll call rates, even though the number was
available as a toll-free call.)
- Local outside calls dialed as 9+7-digit local
number
- Long distance outside calls dialed as 9+1+area code+7-digit
number
There are no extensions that begin with the number 9. Anyone
asking to be transferred to an extension beginning with a '9'
should be considered a security risk and dealt with accordingly.
Always be certain of the destination whenever you transfer a
caller.

Phone Button
Programming
A variety of speed dial buttons and other phone features can be
programmed on your phone. Contact IT Services to have buttons programmed with
different
numbers or features. Your phone templates will also be updated to
reflect the new configuration.
Coverage Path
Feature
What happens to my calls when I am not available to answer my
phone?
If your phone is not forwarded, your calls are 'covered' to the
coverage path assigned to your phone. The coverage path is
administered by Information Technology Services, and can
contain up to six internal extensions where your calls will be
sent. The last point can be Audix voice mail, if you are a voice
mail subscriber.
Considerations:
- SAC
- sends calls immediately down the coverage path without ringing 3
or 4 times.
- Call Forwarding can be used to send your calls to places not on
the coverage path.
- If
your coverage path has all six points administered it's possible
that your phone will ring up to 20 times before your voice mail
answers. (This statement assumes that none of the phones are either
SAC'ed or forwarded)
- If
you are not a voice mail subscriber, your calls can not be handled
by voice mail at another extension (front desk, etc).

Call Pickup Feature
This feature enables you to answer a call ringing at a co-worker's
phone. Call Pickup is accessible by dialing *77 or hitting the
Call-Pickup button. You must be assigned in a call pick up group
with your co-worker in order to 'pickup' their calls.
Directory Feature
This feature enables you to use the letters on the dialpad to
enter an on-campus person's last name to dial their phone without
knowing their number. Utilizes three buttons on your phone
by:
- Press the 'Directory' button - begin to enter the letters of
the person's last name.
- Press the 'Next' button to tab through non-unique
entries.
- Press the 'Call-Display' button to place a call to the person
displayed.

Toll-Free Services

- Public access to your department
- Faculty and staff access to the Remote Access Server,
voice-mail and voice service to department
We
can customize these services for your department, either
permanently or on a temporary basis for a special project for your
department.
Phone Conferencing
Conference calls can be placed from your digital telephone set to
join a maximum of you and five other parties by the
following:
- Have the initial party(ies) on an active call
- Press the 'Conf' button. (This will place the current caller(s)
on Hold and allow you place a subsequent call)
- When the subsequent caller is on the line, press the 'Conf'
button a second time. (This will join you and the other callers
together)
- To
add another party, repeat the above instructions.
If
more than five additional callers need to be added,
IT Services can schedule other
bridging equipment at no additional cost.
Most digital phone sets have 'speakerphone' conferencing
capabilities. (Earlier models of the 7406 have a one-way only
speakerphone) These sets provide only basic speakerphone
capabilities and have a tendency to cut out with ambient room
noise. A Polycom conferencing system with remote microphones is
available and will accommodate a larger group (up to 20 persons)
without the cutouts. This set can be scheduled on the Audio-visual
at Wichita calendar through Groupwise for most of the on-campus
conference rooms.
