Stephanie Seiler

Stephanie SeilerStephanie grew up in Conway Springs, KS, a small farm town southwest of Wichita, and is the second oldest of nine children. When she was in kindergarten, she wanted to be a bus driver, but after being rejected by bus driving school, she finally decided to give up the dream and do medicine instead. Stephanie is a graduate of Newman University and the University of Kansas School of Medicine, and her medical interests currently revolve around the care of children and adults with developmental delays. On a personal note, Stephanie first met her husband in high school, and, after five years of marriage, they had their first child last year. In her free time Stephanie can be found with her family, often working on home improvement projects. Though the new baby is suspiciously adept with power tools, Stephanie promises she has not violated any child labor laws. When not adding value to her house, Stephanie also enjoys running, playing tennis and the piano, and drinking margaritas. Upon completion of residency, Stephanie will either practice rural medicine, or work as a hospitalist.

William Hou

William HouWilliam comes from Ottawa, Ontario, the capital of Canada, where the tulip flowers bloom beautifully during the spring, and the leaves of the maple trees give the hills a magnificent crimson glow during the fall. He got his undergraduate education at the University of Toronto, and went to med school at St. George's University. His interests in medicine have always been broad, which helped him decide to continue his medical education in a combined medicine and pediatrics program. During his free time he enjoys participating in all types of sports, especially downhill skiing, hockey, and volleyball. Occasionally, he also fancies playing a tune or two on the fiddle, in an attempt to keep what skills he has left with the instrument. William notes that while the future is always hard to predict, with the growing shortage of physicians he plans to serve any community in need of a caring doctor.

Elisha Yaghmai
Elisha Yaghmai

Born in California, raised in Alabama, and educated at Harvard University, Elisha took a few years off to explore the world before going to med school in New Orleans, where he also completed an MPH and additional Tropical Medicine training. This all worked fine until a now-notorious hurricane blew him to Dallas, where he both finished med school and got married. Elisha and his wife – a Peds resident – now find themselves in Wichita, and are happy they came. In his spare time Elisha enjoys armchair philosophizing about politics, religion, education, music, and whatever else crosses his path. He and his wife also love to travel whenever they can, and want potential applicants equally infested with the travel bug to know that parking-to-gate time at Wichita’s airport is usually fifteen minutes or less! In the future Elisha thinks he will pursue fellowship training, or possibly graduate training in public policy or international development (his undergraduate interest), or maybe something else entirely. Fortunately, Elisha is only a second-year, so his unbelievable ambivalence is still acceptable. One thing he is actually sure about: his future practice will be international, and hopefully somewhere warm year-round.

Samer Alnabhan

Samer AlnabhanSamer hails from Aleppo, Syria, an ancient, culturally-rich city that in its time has been conquered by nearly everyone you remember from history class, and several others you probably don't. As a wee snip, Samer wanted to be a world football star. Unfortunately, and much to his consternation, he discovered that his brain was consistently faster than his feet, so he had to settle for medical school at the University of Aleppo. From there Samer decided to come to the U.S. for Pediatrics, ultimately landing in Wichita. After completing two full years, and with the end of residency in sight, Samer's voracious medical curiosity got the best of him, and he decided to switch to Med/Peds. In his free time Samer still lives the dream vicariously, and can often be found playing, watching, or discussing soccer. He also enjoys discussing religion and traveling. In the future Samer wants to do a combined Med/Peds Cardiology fellowship, after which he would like to return to Syria to practice.

Carl AnschutzCarl Anschutz (Chief Resident)

Originally from Great Bend, KS, Carl was born and raised a Jayhawk (figuratively speaking, of course). He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biochemistry from the University of Kansas. After completing medical school at the University of Kansas School of Medicine Wichita campus, he is now in his fourth (and final!) year of residency. While in medical school he met his wife, Sarah; when they have the opportunity, they enjoy traveling, going to sporting events and concerts, jogging, and spending time outdoors. Since last year Carl has taken up golfing, though he is not sure if what he does out on the course can really be considered golf... After completing residency Carl plans to pursue a career in hospital-based medicine, either as a hospitalist or in the Emergency Department.

Kendra Marcotte

Kendra MarcotteKendra was born and raised in Wichita, KS, but quickly discovered she needed to spend time by the ocean, and thus moved away for college to receive her degree in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from the University of California at Santa Cruz -- go Fighting Banana Slugs! After college she took a year off to work as a phlebotomist and study for the MCAT. She chose to attend medical school at KU in Kansas City, and then, in keeping with a proud KU Med tradition, choose to spend her last two years in Wichita to get more hands-on clinical experience. She then decided to stay in town for residency as well, and the rest is history. On the personal side, Kendra met her future husband during her year off after college, and they married a week before her medical school graduation. When not at work, she enjoys spending time with her husband, stepdaughter, and 2 dogs. She also enjoys watching movies, trying new restaurants, trolling the internet for entertaining websites, lamenting Kansas' currently intractable red-state status, and reading for pleasure. After residency, she hopes to work as a hospitalist.

Nathan Tofteland

Nathan ToftelandNate is completing his final year of med-peds training and is currently considering several options for post-graduate employment, including academic or private traditional med-peds practice versus pursuing fellowship training in gastroenterology. He took a nontraditional route to medical school, receiving undergraduate degrees from Tabor College in Biblical/religious studies and philosophy while completing the required courses for pre-medical education. Following undergraduate training, he attended the University of Kansas School of Medicine, completing his 3rd and 4th years in Wichita. Choosing med-peds was the best fit for him, as he had varied interests that included pediatric and adult primary care, critical care, preventive medicine, and the desire to possibly pursue fellowship training following residency. Nate chose to stay in Wichita for multiple reasons, including a greater likelihood to learn procedures without fellow competition, a strong teaching panel that includes excellent, energetic volunteer faculty, broad training in inpatient and outpatient care, and the many friendships his family had made over the preceding 2 years. During his days off, Nate enjoys spending time with his wife, Angela, and their two children, Caleb (2 1/2 years old) and Abigail, who was born at the beginning of this academic year. As such, they take many trips to city parks, the Sedgwick County Zoo, and other toddler-friendly areas. They also enjoy spending time with their families who live in Kansas and friends in the Wichita area. During the school year, Angela and he lead a small group of other young families from River Community Church. When not participating in Caleb's many two-year-old activities, Nate likes to play golf, "compete" in fantasy football, and read non-medical books and articles. He started running regularly this year and was happy to have completed his first 10K race this spring.
