Consumer Health
Finding health information on the Web can be overwhelming. We have compiled this list of Web sites, which have been developed by government organizations, libraries, professional associations, and academic medical centers. The National Library of Medicine’s MedlinePlus Web site www.medlineplus.gov is an excellent consumer health web site. In addition, the following links are provided for general educational purposes only.
General Health
MedlinePlus
MedlinePlus is the National Library of Medicine’s Web site for consumer
health information. It provides links to authoritative web sites on health
topics, drug information, directories, medical organizations, medical encyclopedia,
news, publications, databases, and more.
Bluestem: Health for Kansans
Bluestem is a database of health related Internet sites especially useful
to Kansans.
CAPHIS: Web Sites You Can Trust
Refers healthcare consumers to the Medical Library Association’s
Top 100 list of healthcare resources. CAPHIS is the Consumer and Patient
Health Information Section of the Medical Library Association.
healthfinder
A gateway web site for health and human service information from the National
Health Information Center, US Department of Health and Human Services.
HealthWeb
Lists medical information by broad general topics. It is a collaborative
project of the health sciences libraries of the Greater Midwest Region
of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine and those of the Committee
for Institutional Cooperation.
KidsHealth
Up-to-date information on medical conditions, growth, food and fitness,
childhood infections, and immunizations. Interactive information for parents,
kids and teenagers from the Nemours Foundation.
MayoClinic.com
Web site with links to diseases and conditions, treatment decisions, drugs
and supplements, healthy living, and health tools from the Mayo Clinic.
NOAH: New York Online Access to Health
Consumer health information listed by health topics and alphabetically
by condition, which has been developed by library organizations in the
New York City area.
Quackwatch
Web site whose purpose is to “combat health-related fraud, myths,
fads and fallacies” and to improve the quality health information
on the Internet.

American Academy of Family Physicians
Provides health information for women, men, children, teenagers, and seniors,
plus health tools and healthy living tips.
American Academy of Pediatrics
News and resources devoted to the health and well being of infants, children,
adolescents, and young adults.
American Cancer Society
Cancer information for patients, family and friends, survivors, donors
and volunteers and professionals.
American Diabetes Association
Non-profit health organization providing diabetes research, information,
and advocacy.
Diabetes nutrition, recipes, weight loss, e-newsletters, support, and
treatment and care information.
American Heart Association
Information on heart diseases and stroke, healthy lifestyles, resources,
warning signs, e-newsletters, and more.
American Lung Association
Health information on tobacco control and lung diseases, including lung
cancer, hayfever, asthma, tuberculosis, emphysema, pneumonia, sarcoidosis,
HIV/AIDS and lung disease, influenza and others.
American Medical Association (AMA) Patients page
Provides links to “doctor finder”, patient network, specialty
societies, and patient resources from the Medem Medical Library, a collaborative
project of the AMA and leading medical societies.
National Organization for Rare Disorders, Inc.
A voluntary health organization dedicated to helping people with rare disorders.
Search NORD’s index of rare diseases, index of organizations, and
view programs, services, and research.
Government
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)
Provides evidence-based health information for consumers, patients, and
health professionals. Links to the National Guideline Clearinghouse,
a public resource for clinical practice guidelines.
Alzheimer’s Disease
Education and Referral Center (ADEAR)
Current, Alzeheimer’s disease (AD) information and resources from
the U.S. Government’s National Institute on Aging.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
Llinks to the National Immunization Program, Public Health Emergency Preparedness
and Response, and Travelers’ Health. Resources include disease information,
reference materials, travel updates, health and occupational safety, nutrition
charts, dietary guidelines, Body Mass Index, growth charts, and more.
Consumer.gov (FirstGov for
Consumers)
Your resource for consumer information from the federal government. This
is a “one-stop” link to a broad range of federal information
resources. Designed to locate information by categories such as Health,
Food, Product Safety, Your Money, and Transportation.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
Information for consumers listed by broad topics. FDA regulates products
in the following categories: food, drugs, medical devices, biologic,
cosmetics, radiation-emitting products, and more.
National Cancer Institute (NCI)
Cancer information for patients and health professional about cancer types,
risk factors, testing, treatment options, clinical trials, coping and resources
from the Dept. of Health and Human Services.
National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug information (NCADI)
Current information and materials concerning substance abuse prevention
and treatment, which includes information for specific populations and
a section on culture and prevention.
National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH)
Mental health information listed by topics.
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Consumer health information with links to healthy lifestyles, research,
body systems, conditions and diseases, health and wellness, health hotlines,
and federal health agencies.
NIH Senior Health
Age related heath information that is easily accessible for adults 60 and
older. Developed by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National
Library of Medicine (NLM), both part of the National Institutes of health
(NIH)
National Women’s
Health Information Center (NWHIC)
Health information for women, includes medical topics, statistics, screening
information, newsletter, Women’s’ Health FAQ’s and additional
information on women’s health.
Nutrition.gov
Easy access to food and nutrition information from various federal government
agencies.
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SSAMHSA)
Public information on or assistance with mental health or substance abuse
problems.

A consumer health site, links to authoritative full text HealthTopics,

Multilingual Health Information
Links to web sites with health information in non-English languages.
Some offer both English and other languages.
Spiral: Selected Patient Information Resources in Asian Languages
Web site developed at Tufts University’s Health Sciences Library
with detailed health information in seven Asian languages: Chinese, Hmong,
Khmer, Laotian, Thai, and Vietnamese. It contains information for both
physician and patient.
24 Languages
Electronic access to over 200 health education brochures and sound recordings
in 24 different languages. This project of the Spencer S. Eccles Health
Sciences Library, in partnership with the Utah Department of Health, the
Immunization Action Coalition, AAPCHO, and other to improve access to health
materials in multiple languages.
