13 ACGME-accredited residency programs

The 13 programs in Wichita are administered by the Wichita Center for Graduate Medical Education (WCGME) and the one program in Salina is administered by the Salina Health Education Foundation (SHEF).

260 positions for residents

60 percent of resident graduates (70 percent in family medicine) eventually establish practices in Kansas

Board of Regents creates the “Wichita State University
Branch of the University of Kansas School of Medicine” D. Cramer Reed, MD, named 1st dean

1972
Medical school office established on WSU campus
Medical school moves to WSU’s Fairmount Towers dormitory

1973
1st 15 medical students arrive to begin clinical training

1974
LCME accredits the medical school

1975
First graduating class (14 students)
Medical school moves to E.B. Allen Hospital

1980
KUSM-W Family Practice Residency Program at Smoky Hill, Salina, Kan., opens

1992
Children’s Primary Care Clinic opens at Sedgwick County Health Department

1996
Roberts Center For Research/ Kansas Health Foundation For Primary Care completed

1998
WSU study names KUSM-W an “economic driver” (Repeated in 2004)

1999
Project Access established

2000
NBME Testing Center opens on campus. (Only one of seven on-campus centers in US)
