The KU School of Medicine - Wichita, has “adopted” the children at one of Wichita’s elementary schools.
Various events are organized throughout the year for the children including a Fall Parade on Halloween, a Holiday party, mitten tree and toy drive in December. A school supply drive is held in the fall. In 2002, employees of KUSM-W generously gave hundreds of crayons, Big Chief notepads, pencils, scissors, glue, rulers, paints and several more much needed supplies. Representatives from KUSM-W, along with JayDoc, formally present the boxes of supplies to the Park Elementary teachers on the first day of school.
Through the Community Connection Program, KUSM-W also sponsors a mentoring program. Children from each grade are selected by the teachers to be paired up with KUSM-W volunteer mentors. The mentors spend one hour a week with the kids eating lunch, reading books, helping with homework or any other special needs the kids may have. The mentoring program has been very successful and is very rewarding for both the kids and mentors. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please contact University Relations, Community Connection Program.
