Program Description

The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita General Surgery Residency Program is a University-affiliated, community-based program that is fully accredited and has been in continuous operation for more than 50 years.

Resident training primarily takes place at three major hospitals: Via Christi Hospitals, Wesley Medical Center, and the Wichita Veterans Administration Medical Center, all within a five-mile radius. In addition to the three major hospitals, residents operate in the ambulatory surgery centers; evaluate patients in the hospital clinics and private offices. Residents also spend one month at KUMC in Kansas City to obtain transplant experience.

Wichita, as the largest city in the state of Kansas, is a major referral center for the entire state as well as portions of adjoining states. All major surgical disciplines are represented, including general, cardiothoracic, vascular, pediatric, plastic, colon/rectal surgery, gynecology, and urology. Within the discipline of general surgery, the surgical residents have extensive exposure to the major components of general surgery, i.e. trauma, breast, endocrine, and gastrointestinal. They also have exposure to burn care (Regional Burn Center at Via Christi St. Francis Campus), endoscopy, and critical care. There are no competing surgical fellowships in Wichita.

As you search for a general surgery residency program, we invite you to consider The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita. Should you become a resident in our program, your five years would provide you with a full spectrum of surgical training. Successful completion of our program would prepare you for practice in an urban or rural setting or for fellowship in virtually any area of surgical specialty. If you anticipate performing a fellowship after residency, our graduates have obtained positions in a wide variety of disciplines including Cardiothoracic, Colorectal, Vascular, and Plastic Surgery, Advanced Laparoscopy, Critical Care, and Trauma. Our residency program has a strong emphasis in early operative experience, graduated resident responsibility, research, and education. We strongly encourage you to consider our program.
