"Flower Portraits," 40 color photographs of flowers by Donald L. Vine, MD, professor, Internal Medicine, will be displayed in the William J. Reals Gallery of Art - East at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, Aug. 5 through Sept. 30. A public "closing reception" will be 2:30 - 3:15 p.m., Friday, Sept. 30, in the gallery area. "Flowers are fun to photograph. They are almost always pretty, hold still when there is no wind, are not copyrighted until photographed and do not sue the photographer," Vine said. "Importantly, the closer you look, the more you discover gardens within gardens within gardens and, sometimes, small visitors. "When the composition and lighting are just right, floral images can acquire a timeless quality, much like a painting," he said. "My goal is to capture this quality and share it with others." Selections come from an image collection of plants at Dyck Arboretum of the Plains, Hesston, Kan.; Botanica - the Wichita Gardens and Chisholm Creek Park, Wichita, Kan.; God's Garden, Solomon, Kan.; botanical gardens in Albuquerque, N.M., Denver, Colo., and Cape Town, South Africa; and in Wichita backyards and along the Kansas roadside. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, is available during regular gallery hours, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The building is closed to the public Saturdays and Sundays. The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita is nationally recognized as a pioneer in community-oriented medical education. Since the first class graduated in 1975, 1,398 physicians have earned medical degrees. About half of these eventually established practices in the state, fulfilling KUSM-W's promise of "Educating Doctors For Kansas." |
