“Southwest and Indian,” 11 acrylic and watercolor paintings by Evelyn Wayne Shrader, will be displayed in the William J. Reals Gallery of Art - East at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, Dec. 2, 2005 - Jan. 27, 2006. A public reception will be 2:30 - 3:15 p.m., Friday, Dec. 2, in the gallery area. Often described as individualistic and self-taught, Shrader blends realism and impressionism to produce images that are strong, yet soft and vibrant. Her style can be the sharp contrasts of bright and bold, with reds, blues and violets, or it can change to the soft hues of pastels - much like the true, yet subtle, colors of the Southwest. Winner of many awards over the past 36 years, Shrader has exhibited nationally as well as locally. Her paintings hang in private collections throughout the Southwest, and she has designed two postcards that are in the Collector Series of the Association of Community Arts Agencies of Kansas. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, is available during regular gallery hours, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The building is closed to the public Saturdays and Sundays. The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita is nationally recognized as a pioneer in community-oriented medical education. Since the first class graduated in 1975, 1,398 physicians have earned medical degrees. About half of these eventually established practices in the state, fulfilling KUSM-W’s promise of “Educating Doctors For Kansas.”
