"Out
Doors," paintings and watercolors by Annie Starkey and Janet Landrum,
will be displayed through Sept. 14 in the William J. Reals Gallery of
Art-East at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, A Kansas native, Starkey is a graduate of Fort Hays State University with a degree in Studio Arts.Inspired by natural surroundings, she loves the "mysterious edges" that may not be noticed by the everyday viewer. As an artist, she sees herself as a storyteller, inviting the viewer to find a personal connection with the subject matter. Landrum began her formal art studies with a goal of becoming a graphic artist, but in 1998, she began painting full time. That design background, however, provides the framework upon which she builds her paintings. Her works alternate between distant landscapes and close-up views of the plants and wildlife inhabiting those scenes. She especially enjoys sharing her fascination with art with children. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, is available during regular gallery hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The building is closed to the public Saturdays and Sundays.
