Layton's
"Drawing on Life"
On display June 1-Aug. 3

An exhibit
of 20 line drawings from Elizabeth "Grandma" Layton is on display
through August 3 in the William J. Reals Gallery of Art-East at the University
of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, 1010 N. Kansas.
Layton produced nearly 1000 drawings after completing her first, and only,
art class at the age of 68. The blind-contour drawings, each including
a caricature of herself, focused on topics including capital punishment,
women's rights, racial prejudice, environment, homelessness, aging, AIDS,
and the right to die. The drawings helped Layton combat depression. Never
selling a drawing, she donated her works to support the causes that were
important to her. Her drawings have been featured in many exhibits and
have been displayed at the Smithsonian National Museum of American Art.
Layton died in 1993 at the age of 83.
A reception for the exhibit will be held later this summer in conjunction
with a lecture by Don Lambert, curator of Layton's traveling exhibit.
The next stop for the exhibit is the La Musee d'art Naif, Montmartre,
Paris.
The exhibit, which is free to the public, may be viewed during regular
gallery hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The exhibit is
closed Saturday and Sunday.
