“Cartooning Wichita,” 42 cartoons by the Wichita Eagle’s editorial cartoonist Richard Crowson, will be on display Sept. 6-Oct. 25, in the William J. Reals Gallery of Art-West at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita. A public reception honoring the artist is 2:30 – 3:15 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6, in the gallery area. “An editorial cartoonist is in the business of stirring things up,” Crowson says. “We are not about winning converts to our particular point of view. “I think of a cartoon as a way of short-circuiting a reaction from readers. Without the paragraphs of written words that most journalists offer, the cartoon should quickly evoke an emotional response. There’s not a lot of intellectualizing going on. Cut to the chase. “As cartoonist Robert Crumb said, ‘Hey! It’s just lines on paper, folks!,’” Crowson concluded. “But it sure is fun drawing those lines.” The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, is available during regular gallery hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The building is closed to the public Saturdays and Sundays.
