“The Kansas Prairie: Its People, Places and Things,” 15 watercolor paintings by Kaye Abbott, will be displayed in the William J. Reals Gallery of Art - East at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, Oct. 7 - Nov. 25. A public reception will be 2:30 - 3:15 p.m., Friday, Oct. 7, in the gallery area. “The subject matter of this exhibit, and much of my work, goes beyond the simplicity it portrays,” Abbott says. “Many of the works are about things of long past … but still remaining. I find these rusted, old objects a true metaphor for my life and others who have experienced life in a grand way, both spiritually and physically. “They ring with familiarity … places and objects now ripened with a beauty deeper than the superficial newness associated with youth,” she continues. “I find them beautiful, full of character. When I see them, I hear an enchanting melody longing to be heard again in a new voice.” The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, is available during regular gallery hours, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The building is closed to the public Saturdays and Sundays. The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita is nationally recognized as a pioneer in community-oriented medical education. Since the first class graduated in 1975, 1,398 physicians have earned medical degrees. About half of these eventually established practices in the state, fulfilling KUSM-W’s promise of “Educating Doctors For Kansas.” |
