Objectives:
This course exposes medical students to the primary care/non-operative aspects of sports medicine. During this course, students will develop skills in the evaluation and management of athletes of all ages and athletic abilities who participate in a variety of sporting activities. The Sports Medicine course is offered at the KUSM-W Family Medicine Residency at Via Christi Regional Medical Center in the Sports Medicine Center located on the St. Joseph campus. The clinical component of the program includes examination and treatment of athletes in the clinic, at the training troom, and on the field. The student will be exposed to high school, college, and professional athletes. They will become familiar with the injuries and illnesses commonly seen by a team physician.
Upon completion of the course, students will have a basic understanding of the skills to:
  1. *Conduct a preparticipation sports exam.
  2. *Prevent sports-specific injuries.
  3. *Evaluate and treat injuries and illnesses in athletes.
  4. *Design home rehabilitation programs for sports injuries.
  5. Design criteria for safe return to sports.
  6. Order appropriate diagnostic laboratory and radiologic tests and interpret the findings.
  7. Apply casts and splints.
  8. Work effectively with athletic trainers, personal trainers, physical therapists and other health care professionals involved in the care of athletes.
  9. Advise athletes on strength training, cardiovascular-fitness, exercise prescription and sports nutrition.
  10. Medical students will be expected to participate in small group discussions on aspects of Sports Medicine by doing selected readings assigned by the course director. Students will also participate in patient care along with physicians (including residents), athletic trainers, and physical therapists in the clinic, in training rooms, and at athletic events.
Evaluation:
Evaluation will be completed by the course director at the end of the course.
