Goal:

This course is designed to provide an opportunity for a student to define and analyze clinical problems in community rather than individual terms. It is intended to build upon topics which have already interested the student in his/her clinical experience by encouraging exploration of the community dimension of health problems.

Objectives:

The student will be assisted to learn:

  1. To select and define a suitable group for study in the limited time available.
  2. To use library resources in making a critical review of the relevant medical literature.
  3. To design and conduct a simple study--most probably a record-based descriptive study or a sample survey.
  4. Techniques for data handling and analysis appropriate to the study.
  5. The use of results in drawing conclusions and making recommendations.
  6. Procedure for writing and submitting a scientific paper for publication.

Evaluation:

Student performance will be evaluated using well-established criteria developed by community medicine clerkships in other medical schools.  Emphasis will be placed on the ability to understand and tackle problems in an appropriate manner rather than the generation of large amounts of data or the "solution" of complex issues.
