Objectives:

This elective will assist student to learn:

  1. Diagnostic skills relevant to the identification of alcohol/drug dependency in patients of all ages, whatever the presenting complaint.
  2. Management techniques including intervention, in-patient and out-patient models of treatment, prognosis and aftercare, including the role of community resources for patient and family.
  3. Preventive skills including an understanding of the epidemiology of addictive diseases and resources to identify and intervene with individuals and families at risk.

Procedures:
The course will emphasize direct patient contact, both in-patient and out-patient, supported by required reading and didactic sessions with faculty members. Students will be required to attend daily teaching rounds in the Addictions Treatment Unit (ATU), Via Christi, St. Joseph Campus, and to participate in the assessment and treatment of assigned patients. They will also be required to spend time with out-patient treatment groups (some evening meetings) and to complete assignments at other sites, such as:
  1. Alcoholics Anonymous (support group for recovering addicts)
  2. Al-Anon (family support group)
  3. Alateen (family support group)
  4. Options Inc. (half-way house)
  5. The Prevention Center
  6. USD 259 School-based programs for treatment and prevention

 

Evaluation:

Student evaluation will be based on competence in this specialty at the end of the rotation, performance during the elective, and completion of assignments. Evaluation documents will include those currently used by the Department with the addition of three required case presentations of which at least one must involve an adolescent patient.
