Dr. Callaway graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University (1975) and the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine (1979). He completed his residency at the St. Joseph Family Practice Residency (1982) and was in private practice in Duncan, Oklahoma, for 10 years before returning to Wichita to serve on the faculty of the KU School of Medicine-Wichita Family Medicine Residency at St. Francis Medical Center in 1992. In 2001, Dr. Callaway became the Program Director of the KUSM-W Family Medicine Residency at Wesley Medical Center. He accepted the position of the KUSM-W Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education in 2013. Dr. Callaway served on the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors (AFMRD Board of Directors from 2004-2008. He served on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Residency Review Committee for Family Medicine from 2012-2018, including as Vice Chair from 2014-2018. Dr. Callaway has received numerous teaching awards from residents and medical students, and has been recognized at the national level for educational leadership. He received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award from the St. Francis Family Medicine Residency in 1994, and the KAFP Exemplary Teacher of the Year Award in 1999. He received the Thor Jager Award from the KUSM-W Class of 2000, and the Jayhawker MD Award in 2005. Dr. Callaway received the Nikitas J. Zervanos Outstanding Program Director Award in 2009, jointly awarded by the American Academy of Family Physicians and the AFMRD. In 2011, Dr. Callaway was recognized with the AFMRD Gold level of Program Director Recognition Award. From 2010-2018, Dr. Callaway was listed by the Wichita Business Journal with Best Doctors recognition.
