Facilities Policies - Inclement Weather

Inclement Weather Procedure

In the event of inclement weather (described as heavy snow, ice, extreme thunderstorms, etc.) the Dean in consultation with the Associate Dean for Administration will determine implementation of the inclement weather procedure by 6:30 a.m. In the event of inclement weather, the University Telephone Chain will be used to notify all employees. University Relations will report delayed opening of the school or curtailment of medical school operations for the entire day to television channels 3, 10 and 12 and Radio KFDI AM & FM. Information Technology Services will create a news message that can be found on the Wichita.kumc.edu home page.

In addition staff may call the KUSM-W inclement weather hotline (293-3888) to hear instructions concerning work hours.

Medical Students: For information regarding inclement weather policies for medical students, please visit the Academic & Student Affairs website http://wichita.kumc.edu/asa/student.html or call ASA at 293-2603.

Time and Leave

In the event of a declaration of inclement weather, the following pay policies will be followed.

  1. Employees who elect to work during a declaration of inclement weather will be paid at their regular rate of pay.
  2. Employees who have received prior approval for an authorized leave that falls during a declaration of inclement weather will not be affected by the provisions of this policy.

No declaration of inclement weather

  1. Employees who decide not to report to work due to weather conditions in the absence of a declaration of inclement weather shall follow their department’s procedure for reporting an absence.
  2. Employees not reporting to work, reporting to work after their regular schedule, or leaving early due to weather conditions in the absence of a declaration of inclement weather will be required to use vacation, compensatory time, discretionary leave, or leave without pay. At the discretion of the department head, employees may be able to make up missed work during the same workweek as the leave.

These pay policies do not affect the requirement that exempt employees must report their leave in half-or full-day increments.
