Staff Bios

Susan Clark
Susan has worked at the medical school for more than ten years. As the catalog and collection coordinator for the library, she is responsible for cataloging new materials as well as managing the online catalog, assisting with references, monitoring circulation, and presenting for high school student visits. When she isn't working in the library, she enjoys sewing, needlework, and ethnic cooking and baking.

Karen Drake
Karen has worked at the medical school since 1993. She serves as a student liaison and advisor for the Student Coordinating Council and Medical Student Assembly. She also works with Alpha Omega Alpha and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. Karen's other duties include overseeing all testing processes, as well as advising students on clerkship requirements, electives, academic matters, and career planning. She received a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Fort Hays State University. Outside of working with the students, she enjoys spending time with her family.

Sue Kennedy
Sue joined the staff nine years ago and she is responsible for providing financial support services for Academic and Student Affairs, Medical Sciences, and the Standardized Patient program; ordering supplies; and assisting the department with the testing center. Prior to coming to the medical school, she spent 34 years in the banking industry. In her spare time, she enjoys exploring genealogy, reading, and sewing.

Sarah Maddox
Sarah assists with scheduling, recruiting standardized patients, and staging the center for simulated patient events. She was first exposed to the center as a research intern for Wichita State University. She has been a standardized patient herself, participating in a variety of simulated events. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. 

Garold Minns, M.D.
Dr. Minns currently serves as professor of medicine for the Department of Internal Medicine. His current administrative appointments include associate dean for Academic and Student Affairs and program director for the Internal Medicine residency program. Dr. Minns is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and is Governor for the Kansas Chapter of the ACP.

Upon receiving his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine (KU), Dr. Minns completed his postgraduate residency at KU in internal medicine. He then completed a fellowship in Infectious Diseases through KU and affiliated hospitals. Dr. Minns is board certified in internal medicine and infectious disease. He is a consultant for the Wichita Sedgwick County TB clinic.

Dr. Minns has multiple roles in student and resident medical education. He is a member of the Education Council, Faculty Council, Academic Committee, and Admissions Subcommittee for the university.

Cindy Olson
Cindy is responsible for reception, student communications, scheduling meetings, filing, coordinating the annual senior banquet, and various other administrative duties. Cindy is an amateur genealogist, loves history, antiques, and spending time with her husband and two girls.

Kris Roudebush
Kris assists with recruiting patients, organizing sessions, preparing the facility for encounters, and recording events. She has a background in technology and business.

Melanie Runge
Melanie has a long history of helping students having worked in Academic and Student Affairs since 1979. She is responsible for student scheduling of first year summer electives, third year clinical tracks, fourth year required and elective courses, and away electives. She also works with visiting students and assists with student evaluations, student graduation credits fulfillment, and manages the student database.

Patty Shay
Patty has been with the school for twenty years. As interlibrary loan coordinator, she is responsible for coordinating and fulfilling interlibrary loan and special lending requests as well as providing reference assistance.

Heather van Buuren
Heather has served as director of Academic and Student Affairs for 14 years. She is responsible for leading the functions of the department and the Farha Medical Library, including staffing, managing the budget, student services, continuous quality improvement, and strategic initiatives. She received a Master of Science in counseling and a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Fort Hays State University. Outside of the office, she spends time sailing/boating, running, paddle boarding, and reading.
