The goal of the Web Development Unit is to provide complete Web development services that include HTML/Web page design and layout, form design, Flash animation, interactive and database-driven Web pages.

The Web Development Unit utilizes the latest technology to produce interactive, informative, visually appealing, and user-centered Web pages.

All Web pages developed adhere to the administrative guidelines for the University of Kansas Medical Center, the KU School of Medicine-Wichita and the University Relations style guide.

Turnaround Time

Small projects consisting of minor text changes or creation can generally be done within 2 business days.

Turnaround time on large projects such as adding new pages, creating a new Web site, or a Web site re-design varies based on the complexity of the job. A time-line and cost estimate will be provided, and we will work closely with the department to meet time-frame goals.

If you are interested in having a new Web site designed, please contact the Web Development Unit.

New Web Site or Web Site Re-Design:
The following is a workflow outline of the Web design process. The customer has interaction and approval at each phase.

Step 1 - Site Definition

  • Initial meeting with Department / Unit
  • Department fills out Customer Survey
  • Concept for site developed
  • Site Goals Defined with Customer

Step 2 - Develop Site Structure

  • Customer Gathers Content
  • Sitemap created
  • Navigation and page flow developed

Step 3 - Graphic Design

  • Graphic Designer meets with customer to go over concept
  • Initial graphics created

Step 4 - Site Design

  • Initial lay-out of homepage and secondary page with content
  • 1st draft of site

Step 5 - Quality Assurance of Site and Final Review by Web Development Unit and customer

  • Spell check
  • Search engine tags
  • Design and code consistency
  • Browser compatibility checks
  • Monitor resolution checks
  • Hyperlinks checks

Step 6 - New/revised site is live

Web Page Changes:

Step 1 - Print out the Web page(s) that you want changed

Step 2 - Make the corrections on the print-out of the Web pages and send to Educational Technology

Step 3 - The Web Development Unit will make the necessary changes and send you a proof to look at.

Step 4 - Once the changes are approved, the Web pages are made live.

If I have a Web design project that I or my department wants to do, how do I start the process?

How much does having a Web page designed cost?

For complete site maintenance, there is a yearly charge of $480 per site. This includes all text changes, re-designs, new graphics, new pages, etc. Each additional Web site costs $480 per year.

If I already have graphics made, can I use them on the Website?

For new sites, we like to develop all the graphical elements of the site, including logos and navigation, to insure quality and proper optimization for the Web. Existing logos and graphics on a site may be used if they meet Web graphic standards.

Can I put a journal article on the Web?

Yes, if you have copyright permission. For more information please see the Copyright Policy.

Can PowerPoint presentations be put on the web?

Yes. Contact the Web Development Unit and we will post your presentation to your Web site.

Web Design Terminology

Site map
A map that shows how your Web site is laid out. It shows all of the Web pages and how they are linked to each other. Example

Site index
An alphabetical or topical listing of the pages in your Web site.

Online form (Web form)
A fill-in form on a Web page that can be sent via e-mail to a specified person.

Database-driven Web page
A Web page that is created from information stored in a database, so that you can create personalized pages, dynamic pages and customized content.

Flash
A type of Web programming that allows for dynamic, interactive, and animated Web pages.

HTML
Hypertext Mark-up Language - the programming that creates a Web page
