Dismissal for Academic Failure
Receipt of Unsatisfactory Grade
A student receiving an unsatisfactory grade in a single course,
clerkship or other academic experience will be placed on Academic
Probation. In addition, students whose cumulative grade
point average falls below 2.0, because of grades other than unsatisfactory,
will be placed on Academic Probation at the time
in the curriculum where the grade point average becomes less than
2.0. Academic Probation does not affect attendance
in subsequent courses or clerkships during the clinical education
years except in the following situations:
- An unsatisfactory grade in a required clinical clerkship must
be remediated as soon as possible after receiving the unsatisfactory
grade.
- Courses that require satisfactory completion of a prerequisite
course before the subsequent course(s) can be taken.

Receipt of Two Unsatisfactory Grades
A student receiving two unsatisfactory grades, whether remediated
or not, will be placed on Suspension. In addition,
students whose cumulative grade point average has fallen below 2.0
for two consecutive semesters will be placed on Suspension.
Suspension means that the student’s normal progress through
the curriculum will be stopped. A decision to hold a dismissal hearing,
to grant remedial experiences, or to permit continuation in the
curriculum will be made by the Academic Committee after careful
consideration of the student’s entire academic record. Removal
of suspension and continuation in the curriculum requires satisfactory
remediation of the specific deficiencies according to criteria established
by the course directors and approved by the Academic Committee and
Dean’s Office. A student may repeat any given course or clerkship
only once. Failure to meet the criteria of the remedial experiences
is grounds for Dismissal.
